Historical Gurdwara in California Turns 103 Years Old

STOCKTON, California, USA – The Stockton Gurdwara Sahib – California, USA holds great historical significance for the Sikh Community. It is a major milestone for the Gurdwara Sahib in Stockton as it is commemorating its 103th foundation anniversary. It was the first Gurdwara Sahib in United States of America (USA). The Stockton Gurdwara Sahib was only one gurudwara to serve the Sikh Sangat living in the whole of (USA) in 1912.

With joint efforts of Baba Vasakha Singh and Baba Jawala Singh ji the Gurdwara Sahib come into existence in 1912. The land was purchased on South Grant Street in Stockton for the use of the Gurdwara in September of 1912. A small farm house that was already standing on the lot was used as the main building of the Gurdwara. This building still stands where a library is now implemented. A Nishan Sahib was also hoisted for the first time at the Gurdwara in 1912.

Stockton Gurdwara Sahib now is a well established Sikh institution with programs taking place daily. The Gurdwara Sahib came into being with efforts of the ‘Gadri Babas’ (freedom fighters) a century ago. Sikh congregations used to arrive here from various parts of California, from as far as San Diego and Yuba City to meet here on monthly basis. It was used a center to revolt against the British rule in India.
